Overall, this was, yet again, a huge success! The kids are always so excited to get their new coats, even the reluctant fifth graders give a smile when they find one that fits in a color/style that they like. This year, I use previous records to sort of predict the sizes and colors we would need. We started with a nice selection of coats, on a rolling rack, and had our students “shop” - if we didn’t have their size or they didn’t like the color choices, then I would go find one better suited for them. This worked really well and I think everyone was thrilled with the coats they received. It was especially helpful for kids whose size was unknown, or for our older students who maybe needed adult sizes (where styles vary widely). And this was truly a group effort - staff and our volunteer crossing guards helped me greet students on the coldest days of the year to make sure they had WARM coats - if not, straight to the coat shop they went! I don’t know how many times we rolled that cart around or re-stocked…a lot! It was a busy coat season!
We also used the funds to purchase some uniforms for a few students who were in need, as well as some toiletries for a family in a truly desperate situation. But the highlight this year was the big sister who asked us to give a coat to her little sister instead of her - and then cried when we assured her that they would both get brand new, warm winter coats. Their smiles were priceless.
